During Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Simu Liu shared how much the character has changed since audiences first met him in 2021.
“If I know my character, he’s been off somewhere training or defusing situations and saving the day,” Liu said. “Because when you meet him at this point in (Doomsday), he’s a lot more confident and a more self-assured version of who he was when we last saw him.”
That growth is also reflected in Shang-Chi’s appearance. Marvel has given the hero a completely redesigned costume instead of making small adjustments to his original suit, signaling how much he has evolved since the events of his first film and bringing his look closer to the comics.
The Ten Rings Could Finally Reveal Their Biggest Secret
The biggest unanswered question surrounding Shang-Chi has always been the Ten Rings. The beacon introduced at the end of his solo movie has remained unexplained for years, leading many fans to wonder whether Avengers: Doomsday will finally reveal who, or what, it was contacting.
Speculation increased after merchandise tied to the film appeared to describe Shang-Chi as the “only hero powerful enough” to stop Doctor Doom. Although Marvel Studios has not confirmed that description, it has fueled theories that Doom may seek the Rings for their mysterious energy or that they could play a major role in the multiversal conflict.
While Marvel has yet to explain the beacon’s true purpose, the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms that incursions have become central to the story. The footage shows multiple universes, including Earth-616, the Fantastic Four’s Earth-828, and the Fox X-Men universe, colliding as Doctor Doom emerges as the Multiverse Saga’s biggest threat.

The Trailer Sets Up Unexpected Marvel Matchups
The latest trailer also offers the clearest look yet at Shang-Chi’s role in the story. One of its biggest moments shows him facing Channing Tatum’s Gambit inside the X-Mansion, suggesting that heroes from different universes may initially clash before joining forces against Doctor Doom.
Speaking about the fight, Liu praised Tatum for fully committing to the action scenes. “He was a dance partner who was as willing to be down and dirty,” Liu said, referring to the physical demands of filming the sequence.
Liu also spoke about sharing the screen with actors he admired growing up, including Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, who reprise Professor X and Magneto.
“Some of these characters have been around since I was 10,” Liu said. “And getting now to interact with them, it’s just unbelievably joyful.”
The trailer also teases interactions with the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and returning X-Men characters, reinforcing just how large the crossover has become. While Marvel continues to keep most story details under wraps, Shang-Chi appears to be involved from the heart of the multiversal conflict rather than operating on the sidelines.
Shang-Chi 2 Is Still Waiting For Its Turn
Shang-Chi’s return has also reignited questions about the status of his long-awaited solo sequel, which has remained in development since 2021 without receiving a release date.
Later, in an interview with ScreenRant Plus following Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, Liu acknowledged that fans had hoped the studio would finally announce Shang-Chi 2.
“Man, if I had a nickel…” Liu joked after being told many fans expected a sequel announcement during the panel.
The actor thanked fans for continuing to support the character despite the long gap between appearances. “It’s really incredible how much the fans continue to show up for this character and continue to express their enthusiasm,” Liu said. “I hope they continue to do so, because I think it is making a difference.”
Liu also reflected on the five years since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered, saying people still approach him to tell him how much they appreciated the movie. He added that he “can’t wait to do more” and would even “crawl through broken glass” if that’s what it took to return for the sequel.
Liu made it clear that the project’s future is ultimately beyond his control, explaining that the sequel’s development is “unfortunately” not something he can influence. Marvel Studios has yet to announce a release date, but Avengers: Doomsday appears set to give Shang-Chi his biggest role since his MCU debut while keeping anticipation for his standalone sequel alive.
