It has been a decade since Jason Bourne last disappeared into a crowd to the sound of Moby’s Extreme Ways, and fans have spent every one of those years asking the same question. Matt Damon finally has an answer worth paying attention to.
The actor has stayed cagey about a sixth Bourne film for years, offering little beyond polite hope whenever the topic came up. That changed recently, first on The Dan Patrick Show and then again on The Rich Eisen Show, where Damon gave his most direct update yet on where things actually stand behind the scenes.
Damon Confirms Talks With Ed Berger For New Jason Bourne Movie
Damon told Rich Eisen he is actively talking with Edward Berger, the Oscar-winning director of All Quiet on the Western Front, about steering the franchise forward.
“There’s a great director named Ed Berger. He did All Quiet on the Western Front. He’s a wonderful director, and we’re talking about it. We’re just trying to figure it out. We’re trying to nail the story down because I’d love to do it,” Damon said.
That last part is the key detail fans have been waiting on. Damon has flirted with a return before, but this is the closest he has come to confirming the piece move is happening while a real filmmaker is attached and actively developing the story with him.
On The Dan Patrick Show, Damon was just as enthusiastic about stepping back into the role. “It looks really good, and I’m very hopeful that it will happen. If we really feel like we’ve got a shot at doing something great, I’m all in. I love that character. It’s been an incredible part of my life. I’d love to do it again,” he said.
Why a Sixth Bourne Movie Is So Hard To Crack
The holdup, according to Damon, is not interest. It is finding a story that actually deserves to sit next to the original trilogy.
“It’s just that thing where, if we do it, we want it to be like the first three,” he explained. “It’s tough because it’s not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission and people can even change the character. It’s a linear story, so it makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you’re giving people what they want but also enough new stuff.”
That distinction matters. Unlike James Bond, Bourne has always been a serialized character with a memory to reconstruct and a past to outrun, which makes bolting on a sixth chapter far trickier than simply sending him on another mission.
The franchise has grossed more than $1.6 billion across four Damon-led entries and Jeremy Renner’s 2012 spinoff, The Bourne Legacy. NBCUniversal locked down the full rights to Robert Ludlum’s Bourne and Treadstone book series in 2025, with longtime producer Frank Marshall still shepherding the property.
Nothing is officially greenlit yet, and Damon is currently focused on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, now playing in theaters. But for the first time in a decade, a new Bourne movie sounds less like a rumor and more like a matter of when, not if.
