Fifteen episodes into Daemons of the Shadow Realm and I keep changing my mind about whether this show is too slow or exactly paced right.
This Daemons of the Shadow Realm review is my attempt to actually sit down and figure that out, because on a week to week basis it’s easy to lose the thread of how much ground this thing has covered since episode 1.
The Opening Episode Still Holds Up
Yuru hears a “dragon” in the sky in episode 1. It’s a jet. That’s it, that’s the whole trick, and it still works months later because of how the show frames it.
Twins Yuru and Asa look like they’re living in some pre modern mountain village, no phones, no cars, nothing. Then a contrail rips across the sky and the entire premise cracks open before you’ve even had time to get comfortable. I went in expecting a slower burn than this and got smacked with a twist in the first ten minutes instead.
Episodes 4 to 12 Test Your Patience
I won’t pretend this stretch didn’t drag a little. Ken Tadera shows up as Dera’s half brother and becomes Yuru’s unofficial little brother almost immediately, following him around asking to be taught how to fight. Hana’s stuck playing along with a cover story she clearly hates, and the bickering between her and Dera about it is genuinely one of the funnier parts of the mid season.
Buried under all the family stuff, the hunt for Yuru and Asa’s actual parents keeps inching along, eventually pointing toward Okinawa and the Kagemori clan. None of it clicks until episode 12, when Ivan Yosano finally shows up.
Two katana Daemons that cut portals into space. Calm voice, faint smile, zero urgency about anything. He doesn’t feel like a filler antagonist, he feels like someone the show has been building toward the whole time without telling you. The episode ends with him tearing into Higashi Village, and that’s the cliffhanger that actually got me hooked again after a few episodes of coasting.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Cour 2 Stops Playing Around
Episode 13 picks up exactly where 12 left off, no cooldown, Ivan just keeps cutting through the village looking for the fake Asa and her master. Then episode 14 happens.
Danji is a Daemon. Not just any Daemon either, he’s the one paired with the creature that’s been posing as Yuru’s sister this entire time. Years of friendship, and it turns out Danji was assigned to watch him.
What gets me is how Yuru reacts. No yelling, no big blowup, he just walks off by himself to sit with it. That’s harder to pull off than a shouting match and the show nails it. Nobody looks great by the end of that episode either. Danji lied for years. He also actually protected Yuru the whole time. Both things are true and the show refuses to pick a side for you.
Episode 15 doesn’t chase that reveal with another fight, which I respected more than I expected to. Asuma Kagemori’s Daemon pair, Asagiri and Yozakura, gets introduced in one of the creepiest scenes the series has done, Yozakura just pins Yuru down before anyone can react to stop it. Ivan gets a great moment too, casually mentioning that Left’s compatibility with Seal is bad enough that Yuru might never form that contract as long as Left sticks around. One sentence, and suddenly the next duel means something completely different.
People online reacting to episode 14 mostly landed in the same spot, blindsided by Danji and only half joking about not trusting a single side character in this show anymore.
So, Is It Worth Watching?
This Daemons of the Shadow Realm review keeps coming back to the same conclusion. The slow episodes annoyed me in the moment, but almost none of them turned out to be wasted.
The lore is expanding a little faster than the answers are coming, and I’d like the show to slow down on introducing new mysteries for a stretch, but Yuru’s growthYuru as a character has kept up with everything getting thrown at him. Left is about to fight Ivan. Danji is still a prisoner. There’s a lot riding on the back half of this cour, and I’m still in.
