Two episodes left. More open threads than any finale can reasonably close. Episode 22 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm is the show at its most emotionally dense and its most structurally exposed simultaneously and somehow both of those things are true at once without canceling each other out.
Akio Chose His Biological Family and the Kagemoris Are Still Reeling
Akio‘s betrayal has been the season’s most discussed plot point since it was confirmed and episode 22 is where the show finally gives it the emotional weight it deserves. The reveal that he was the one communicating with Ivan is confirmed here, though exactly what connects them, whether blood relation or a shared third party, is still deliberately unclear. What is clear is what drove him there.
His biological parents abandoned him. The Kagemoris took him in and treated him as a sibling. He chose the people who left him over the people who stayed and the show does not try to make that choice clean or sympathetic. It is understandable and unforgivable at the same time and episode 22 holds both of those things without resolving the tension between them.
What makes it land harder than expected is the daemon detail. Akio has congenital analgesia, cannot feel pain, has been read as a sociopath by essentially everyone around him. And yet he clearly cared about his daemons deeply.
The explosives implanted in them, a failsafe designed to eliminate loose ends including him, were something he knew about and could not bring himself to be honest about. That inability to come clean put his foster siblings and others in direct danger and the show does not let him off the hook for it.
Haruo begging Jin to spare Akio is the gut punch of the episode. After everything, after the betrayal, Haruo still did not want him dead. That says more about the Kagemoris than any amount of telling the audience they are the good guys would. Fuyuki’s reaction sits alongside it and neither of them gets a clean emotional resolution because there is not one available.
Asuma‘s mother’s backstory is the episode’s other heavy lift. Treated as family baggage, then ostracized as a freak after her daemons were revealed, with those same daemons being her only companions until Gonzou found her. The show plants this and moves on quickly, which is the wrong call given how much weight it carries, but what it establishes reframes Asuma’s entire arc.

The yellow root-like substance is the new mystery the episode introduces without explaining. Almost certainly another daemon or daemon-related weapon. Almost certainly connected to whoever has been pulling strings behind Ivan, behind Shingo, behind Akio. Shingo being discarded as easily as he was makes much more sense now that he reads as a tool rather than an actual player.
With two episodes left the unresolved list is genuinely alarming. The Higashi conflict still feels underdeveloped in a way that makes the opening massacre register as shock value rather than meaningful moral complexity. The Painless Society is suspicious in a direction the show has not had time to develop. Azami’s situation is unresolved. The true enemy is still one step ahead of everyone.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm needs a second season and episode 22 makes that feel less like a hope and more like a structural requirement.
