As the highly anticipated Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic Michael makes its grand debut, fans have been quick to spot one major missing piece in the cinematic retelling of Michael Jackson’s life: his superstar sister, Janet Jackson. While the film boasts a sprawling cast portraying the legendary Jackson family, the “Rhythm Nation” icon is nowhere to be seen, and fans definitely noticed.
Speaking at the film’s premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Monday night, LaToya Jackson set the record straight on the eyebrow-raising omission. According to LaToya, the call came down to Janet, and Janet alone.
“I wish everybody was in the movie,” LaToya told reporters. “She was asked and she kindly declined, so you have to respect her wishes.”
Despite her absence from the script, director Antoine Fuqua emphasized that there is no bad blood between the production and the music legend. Fuqua noted his immense “respect and love” for Janet, adding that while she chose not to be depicted, she remains fully supportive of her nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who takes on the daunting role of portraying Michael.
The production has been a family affair in many respects, though not without its internal divisions. Michael’s son, Prince Jackson, serves as an executive producer, and LaToya herself is portrayed in the film by Jessica Sula. However, Michael’s daughter, Paris Jackson, has been vocal in her criticism, claiming the film contains “inaccuracies” and “full-blown lies” designed to pander to a specific segment of the fandom.
Behind the scenes, the drama didn’t stop there. The film reportedly underwent major reshoots, with the Jackson estate said to have spent up to $15 million to rework key sections. In particular, scenes tied to the 1993 allegations involving Jordan Chandler had to be removed entirely due to legal restrictions preventing his portrayal.
Despite the controversies, omissions, and ongoing debate, LaToya isn’t holding back her support, especially when it comes to Jaafar’s performance. “I have to tell you that Jaafar was absolutely fabulous,” she gushed. “We all forget and think that we’re watching Mike.”
With Nia Long starring as Katherine Jackson and Colman Domingo as family patriarch Joe Jackson, Michael hits theaters this Friday, promising fans a high-stakes, deeply layered look at the life and legacy of a global icon, even if a few key voices are missing.
