Actor Glen Powell is fast becoming the go-to cast choice for the upcoming remake of Warner Bros’ Them! (1954). With the long-in-development project finally starting to make its way into production, insiders have claimed that the studio is keen on roping in the actor to star in the lead role and turn him into the poster boy of this new summer blockbuster.

Michael Giacchino to direct as remake retools classic sci-fi horror

Giacchino, who made his name scoring Oscar winning movies like Up and TheBatman, is all set to make his feature film directorial debut as he steps behind the camera for this remake. In addition to directing, the composer will handle music composition duties too. Matt Reeves will produce this project via his own production company, 6th & Idaho.

Set for a complete overhaul of the plot involving gigantic irradiated ants wreaking havoc in the New Mexico deserts, the film sees Giacchino taking the premise and giving it a contemporary twist. He claims that his new take will be nothing but an “insane science fiction monster movie” and use the central conflict in the narrative to discuss things related to the unknown.

While Powell’s involvement comes at a time when he is already committed to a number of projects, including his upcoming sci-fi with J.J.Abrams titled TheGreat Beyond and the comedy TheComeback King, which will see him working with JuddApatow. Another upcoming project, which involves Edgar Wright’s actioner TheRunningMan, has hit several roadblocks during development.

For Warner Bros, this remake can be seen as an effort to rejuvenate their early sci-fi property.
