Jon Bernthal just gave fans a fresh reason to be excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it has nothing to do with tanks, symbiotes, or Scorpion. It’s about a hospital bed.
The Punisher actor has been doing press rounds and dropping little nuggets about his time on set with Tom Holland, and this latest one might be the most intriguing yet. Bernthal and Holland have a history that goes back years, having helped each other prep audition tapes for their respective Marvel roles long before either one had the job.
That friendship reportedly carried straight onto the Brand New Day set, where Destin Daniel Cretton has been letting Frank Castle and Peter Parker build a dynamic that fans weren’t necessarily expecting from a PG-13 team-up. And according to Bernthal, one scene in particular stands out above the rest.

Bernthal recently opened up about a scene he revisited during ADR, in which Frank wakes up in a hospital with Peter nearby.
“I just did ADR and I got the scene of me waking up when you’re in the hospital… I’m like, ‘Why am I waking up like that?’… Scene’s great. The wake-up, no bueno,” Bernthal said.
It’s a small detail, but it’s a loaded one. A hospital wake-up scene suggests Frank goes through something rough enough in Brand New Day to land him in a bed, and that Peter is right there when he comes to. Given everything reported about the two vigilantes crossing paths early in the film during that Glasgow-shot tank chase, this could be a quieter aftermath moment that deepens their bond once the action dies down.
Bernthal has been candid about how different this version of Frank Castle is from the TV-MA brutality fans saw in The Punisher: One Last Kill. Kevin Feige has already confirmed the character will have a “different tonality” in the Spider-Man movie, and Holland himself has described the Frank and Peter relationship evolving into something like a big brother-little brother rivalry during filming.
A hospital scene where Frank wakes up disoriented, with Peter watching over him, fits right into that read. It’s the kind of beat that could sell the emotional side of their partnership without losing what makes Frank Castle Frank Castle.
