Marvel fans have spent a year begging for this crossover, and Kevin Feige just gave them a reason to believe it is finally happening. The Marvel Studios boss dropped a tease about Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova that lines up a little too perfectly with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Yelena has been building toward something bigger ever since Thunderbolts rebranded her ragtag team as the New Avengers. Feige has already confirmed she plays a major part in Avengers: Doomsday this December, so any hint of an earlier appearance immediately points to the only Marvel movie standing between now and then.
Kevin Feige Teases Yelena Before Avengers: Doomsday
Speaking on stage at BilibiliWorld in Shanghai, Feige addressed a Yelena cosplayer directly and let the tease land.
“If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday, Yelena plays a big part in that,” Feige said. “But if you don’t want to wait until then, you might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies”
Since Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the only Marvel theatrical release scheduled before Avengers: Doomsday, the math is not subtle. Pugh has been rumored to be joining the film since last August, and Feige’s comment reads like the closest thing to a confirmation Marvel is willing to give this close to release.
It also pays off something Tom Holland has wanted for years. Back in 2022, Holland revealed on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show that he and Pugh had already talked about teaming up on screen, saying it hadn’t been suggested to the big bosses yet, but that he and Florence had definitely spoken about it and hoped to make it happen one day. That casual wish now looks like it is about to come true.
If Yelena does show up, expect something that bridges Brand New Day and Doomsday rather than a full-blown team-up, most likely a scene that nudges Peter Parker toward the New Avengers. Spider-Man: Brand New Day still has Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher confirmed, so Feige’s tease would make Yelena the biggest surprise in an already stacked cast.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
