Yelena Belova is heading into Avengers: Doomsday, and Kevin Feige is making it sound like she is going to matter a lot more than a cameo would suggest.
Marvel fans have been tracking Yelena’s rise since she first showed up as Natasha Romanoff’s chaotic little sister, and now that she has carried her own team through Thunderbolts, the question of what comes next for her is a big one. Feige addressed it directly on stage at BilibiliWorld in Shanghai, and the answer points straight at the biggest crossover event Marvel has ever attempted.
Florence Pugh Is Officially Back As Yelena
Florence Pugh plays Yelena Belova, and she has held the role since her introduction in Black Widow in 2021. Pugh carried Yelena through a Hawkeye appearance, then into the lead of Thunderbolts, where the team rebranded itself as the New Avengers by the end of the movie.
That rebrand matters here. Yelena is not walking into Avengers: Doomsday as a side character borrowed from another franchise. She is walking in as the face of a team that Marvel has spent multiple projects building specifically to stand alongside the Avengers.
Speaking in Shanghai, Feige confirmed as much.
“If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers: Doomsday. Yelena plays a big part in that,” Feige said. “But if you don’t want to wait until then, you might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies.”
What ‘A Little Bit Sooner’ Actually Means
That second half of the quote is where things get interesting. There is exactly one Marvel Studios movie releasing between now and Avengers: Doomsday, and that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters July 31.
Florence Pugh was first rumored to be joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day all the way back in August of last year, and Feige’s comment lines up with that rumor almost too neatly. Feige is not known for loose, off-the-cuff stage banter, especially not this close to a release date, so pointing at sooner in the movies reads as a deliberate marketing beat rather than a slip.
As for the Doomsday half of the equation, everything Marvel has shown at BilibiliWorld supports it. New group art unveiled at the event puts Yelena front and center alongside the rest of the Thunderbolts roster, now operating under the New Avengers banner.
Pugh has essentially spent the last year being positioned as the connective tissue between this era of Marvel movies and whatever comes after Secret Wars, and a big part is about as direct as Feige gets when he is trying not to spoil something.
Whether that means Yelena leads a splinter team inside the battle, gets a major one-on-one moment with Doctor Doom, or simply anchors the New Avengers as a unit throughout the film is still unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that Marvel wants fans thinking about her twice before December, once in July and once in the finale itself.
For Yelena’s arc, this is the payoff of years of setup. She went from comic relief in Black Widow to a grieving sister in Hawkeye to a reluctant leader in Thunderbolts, and now she is being teased as a central figure in the studio’s largest crossover to date.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31, while Avengers: Doomsday follows on December 18, 2026.
