Academy Award-nominated actress Samantha Morton plays Circe in The Odysse, and Nolan has said he wanted to work with her for many years before casting her in the film.
“Samantha Morton is somebody I had wanted to work with for a very long time. And she was absolutely who I had in mind as soon as I finished the script for Circe and the way we were approaching that character. I was thrilled when she said yes,” he said.
The casting paired one of Britain’s most respected dramatic performers with a character whose influence extends beyond a single sequence. Although Circe appears during one stage of Odysseus’ journey, her encounter with the hero carries lasting consequences throughout the story.
How Samantha Morton Impressed The Cast And Crew
Morton’s performance generated attention during production before the film reached audiences. Nolan and producer Emma Thomas both recalled a spontaneous reaction from the cast and crew after she completed one of her scenes.
Nolan said such moments are uncommon on his productions. He added that he had not witnessed a similar on-set ovation since Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker during the making of The Dark Knight (2008).
Nolan also described Circe as the narrative “fulcrum” of The Odyssey. While the character has limited screen time compared with the film’s larger ensemble, he said the emotional weight of the story depended heavily on Morton’s performance.
