Fans had watched Uryu fight beside Ichigo for the entire series, only to see him accept a position as Yhwach’s successor and turn his back on Soul Society. Why Did Uryu Really Join Yhwach?
Uryu’s path to the Wandenreich starts with a mystery he never stopped chasing: how his mother actually died. Digging through his family’s archives, he found his grandfather Soken’s journal, which pointed him toward Yhwach and the Wandenreich insignia. That discovery is what set everything in motion.
Yhwach eventually told Uryu he had chosen him as his successor because Uryu was the only impure Quincy to survive the Auswählen technique nine years earlier, the same process that killed both Uryu’s mother and Ichigo’s mother, Masaki. Uryu’s father, Ryuken, warned him against approaching Yhwach, but Uryu pressed forward anyway, determined to learn the truth about the Quincy and stop Yhwach’s plan from the inside. Was It All a Ploy? Uryu’s Double Agent Status
Uryu’s decision to join the Sternritter served to infiltrate the Wandenreich and act as a double agent working against Yhwach from within his own ranks. He accepted the title of successor, took on the Sternritter letter A for Antithesis, and let Ichigo believe the worst, all while quietly working the other side of the war.
