Ever since Jean Grey showed up in a Marvel’s Wolverine trailer with her hands glowing purple, everyone has been asking one question. Can you actually play as her?

It is a fair question. Insomniac already let players control Mary Jane Watson in Marvel’s Spider-Man games, so handing the controller to a second lead for a few missions would not be a huge stretch.

Jean Grey leaked early, too, with gameplay footage that looked far enough along to make people assume it was locked in. Then the June State of Play trailer confirmed she was in the game at all, and speculation kicked into overdrive.

Is Jean Grey Playable in Marvel’s Wolverine?

The short answer is no. When a fan asked Insomniac Games directly on X whether players would get to control Jean, the studio responded plainly, saying “you play as Wolverine/Logan all the way through.”

That confirms Logan is the only playable character for the entire game. There will not be a Jean Grey chapter or a stealth section built around her the way MJ’s missions worked in Spider-Man. It is worth noting that the leaked footage that got fans excited may simply have come from an earlier build of the game, since plans like this often change over the course of development.

That does not mean Jean is sidelined. She will still show up for missions where she fights alongside Logan, even if the player never takes direct control of her.

What Is Jean Grey’s Role and What Powers Does She Bring?

Gameplay footage from the reveal shows Logan and Jean meeting for the first time while separately trying to save a group of mutants from the Reavers, the cyborg mercenaries familiar to anyone who watched Logan.

Although the two don’t appear to know each other, they pull off a series of tandem attacks that use her telekinetic powers to hold enemies in place so Wolverine can move in for the finishing blow, in a system that plays a lot like the team-up moves from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

In the comics, Jean is one of the most powerful psychics in the Marvel Universe, and the game leans into that. Her design shows her hands and eyes glowing purple as she calls on her telekinesis, letting her lift, throw, and pin down enemies without laying a finger on them.

She is not wearing a classic X-Men uniform in the footage, and there is no sign of backup beyond Logan, suggesting this section of the story catches her working solo before any formal team comes together.

Her presence also matters for what it signals about the wider world Insomniac is building. Jean has no history with Team X, the black-ops mutant squad that otherwise anchors the game’s roster, which means her inclusion opens the door for other X-Men down the line, from Cyclops to Professor X.

What This Means Going Forward

Not being playable does not shrink Jean’s importance to the story. If anything, keeping her as an AI-controlled partner lets Insomniac write her as a fully formed hero with her own agenda, rather than trimming her powers down to fit a limited player-controlled toolkit.

It also keeps the combat focused entirely on Logan’s brutal, close-quarters style, without breaking the pace the way some fans felt MJ’s stealth sections did in Spider-Man.

Whether this is the last we see of Jean or the opening chapter of a much bigger X-Men story inside Insomniac’s universe is still an open question. Fans will not have to wait long to find out either way. Marvel’s Wolverine claws its way onto PS5 on September 15.
