If you tuned into Love Island USA Season 8 expecting a full cast and got a missing face instead, you’re not alone. One contestant was removed before the season even got off the ground, and the story behind it has been all over social media.

Vasana Montgomery was announced as part of the Season 8 lineup on May 28. The 25-year-old from Beaverton, Oregon, was one of the fresh faces Peacock introduced ahead of the new season. But within 48 hours, she was gone. No dramatic villa exit, no elimination ceremony, just a quiet removal that quickly became very loud news.

What Got Vasana Montgomery Kicked Off Love Island USA?

Two videos from Montgomery’s past resurfaced shortly after Peacock’s cast announcement. Both had previously been on private accounts, which meant they only became visible to the public once her name entered the spotlight. In one video, she directs the n-word at someone unprompted. In the other, she raps along to song lyrics that include the slur.

Peacock acted fast. Montgomery was expelled from the show on May 30, two days after her introduction to fans. The network did not release a lengthy statement; the decision spoke for itself.

It is worth knowing this is not the first time Love Island USA has faced this exact situation. In Season 7, contestant Yulissa Escobar was removed for using the n-word in old social media posts. Later that same season, Cierra Ortega was also dismissed after racial slurs targeting Asian people came to light. Montgomery’s removal makes it the second consecutive season Peacock has had to cut a contestant for racist content before the show could run its course.

Vasana Montgomery’s Response and Full Apology

Montgomery broke her silence on Wednesday via her Instagram story. She addressed the videos directly and did not attempt to minimize what was in them.

“I want to address a couple videos from my teen years that have recently resurfaced,” she wrote. “In those videos, I used a racial slur. There is no excuse for it, and I am deeply sorry. I am embarrassed and disappointed by my words. I take full responsibility for what I said and understand why it has hurt and upset people.

“Since then, I have grown a lot as a person and taken the time to educate myself, listen, learn, and better understand the impact that language can have. That growth does not erase my mistake, and I am not asking anyone to excuse it. I believe people should be held accountable for their actions, but I also believe in growth, learning, and becoming better. To anyone I hurt or disappointed, I am truly sorry.”

Peacock has not publicly responded to the apology. Whether viewers accept it, and whether Montgomery’s Love Island USA chapter is truly closed, remains to be seen.

Love Island USA Season 8 is currently airing on Peacock.
