One thing the third and fourth seasons of Invincible taught us was that it wasn’t necessarily about power levels and battles anymore. Right now, the main question is whether Debbie will ever forgive Nolan, despite all that happened. And since the show diverges from the source material, the character development has become quite interesting to observe. Now Nolan isn’t just an unforgivable betrayer but someone who also lied to his wife for years, ignored her feelings, and killed thousands of innocent beings in his attack on Earth. Yet, at this point in time, he is trying to redeem himself by going against his people.
Why the Forgiveness Debate Is Split
There are two sides to the question. According to one of them, Debbie shouldn’t forgive Nolan because that would go against everything she’s been doing. She managed to pick up the pieces of her life after she was abandoned by Nolan. Not only that, but she finally realized how much Nolan had hurt her in many ways, such as referring to her as a “pet” and establishing a whole new family while she thought of him as dead. Therefore, forgiveness wouldn’t feel right.
Others say that it is important to keep in mind Invincible’s central theme. In the animated show, redemption matters, as Nolan learned about the things he had done on Earth and changed his course of action accordingly. He doesn’t serve his empire anymore, instead joining Mark in the fight against them. This means there is still hope for forgiveness, but only if Nolan continues sacrificing for others and helping them instead of doing what is expected of him.
Season 4 Puts War in the Spotlight
It goes without saying that the new season has continued Invincible’s war plotline. After Mark lost one of his fights to Conquest, he and the rest of his teammates focused on dealing with the consequences. As for Nolan Grayson, he plays an important role in the fight against his former allies by taking an active part in the Coalition of Planets’ activities. His redemption process is taking place through those actions.
Debbie has yet to forgive Nolan Grayson despite his attempts. She doesn’t even seem willing to let him try, as she hasn’t rushed into a reconciliatory relationship with him yet. In other words, the two characters are currently having a kind of truce rather than a relationship.
Thragg as a New Antagonist and Mark’s New Allies
As of now, we have a new leader of the Viltrum Empire – Thragg. His leadership style differs from Conquest’s since he’s quite tactical about what he does. The fact that Invincible is introducing a new opponent is another example of how the conflict is evolving. Apart from that, the war is also going to get more complex thanks to the introduction of such characters as Tech Jacket and Thragg.
The protagonist might be going through a lot of changes due to the current events. First, the coming war and Scourge Virus threaten to make Mark more ruthless in his actions. Moreover, he might find himself allied with Dinosaurus, which can affect his relationship with Eve.
Season 4 still doesn’t know whether Debbie will eventually forgive Nolan.
