The 25-year-old actress behind Obsession‘s breakout performance as Nikki Freeman sat down with Complex this week and opened up about the stretch of time nobody saw. After filming wrapped on a major project, her career quietly stalled, and she had to figure out how to survive while waiting for Hollywood to call back.
The 18 Months Nobody Talked About
Navarrette had been a recognizable face on TV since landing the role of Sarah Cortez on Superman & Lois in 2021, a run that lasted three seasons before she and six co-stars were let go ahead of the fourth and final season due to budget cuts. For most actors, that kind of exit is a gut punch. For Navarrette, it turned into something worse: silence.
In the Complex interview, she revealed she went a full year and a half without landing any acting roles after filming Obsession. “I was auditioning… nothing was sticking,” she said. To keep the lights on, she did two things: walked dogs and streamed video games on a PC she built herself.

Navarrette had already been building a following on Twitch for years, streaming titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Halo, Red Dead Redemption, and The Last of Us alongside her older brother Amani. Gaming was never just a hobby for her. During that dry spell, it became a lifeline.
From Twitch Streams to Scream Queen
What makes this story land differently is the context around Obsession itself. The film cost less than $1 million to make and exploded at the box office, pulling in tens of millions worldwide and turning its cast into overnight sensations.
It has since grossed over $330 million globally, and Navarrette’s performance as Nikki sits at the center of all of it. Critics praised her range, particularly noting that the low-budget production pushed her and the crew to experiment with stunts, vocals, and facial movements, none of which used AI or CGI.
The gap between “auditioning and nothing sticking” and “Academy Award candidate” is only about 18 months. That is the part of the career timeline that rarely makes it into profiles. Navarrette is one of the few actors willing to say it out loud.
She has already been cast in Invertigo, a thriller with a release date yet to be announced, and the industry’s interest in her is only growing.
