Tom Holland has locked down the role of Spider-Man for nearly a decade now, but that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering what a different casting choice might have looked like. So when Holland was asked to imagine Timothée Chalamet suiting up as the wall crawler instead, he didn’t hold back.
The hypothetical has floated around fan circles for years, especially given Chalamet’s rise as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young actors.
Both stars came up around the same time, both built devoted fanbases, and both have become synonymous with major franchises, Holland with Spider-Man and Chalamet with Dune. That overlap made the question irresistible for interviewers, and eventually it landed in front of Holland himself.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz, Holland admitted he could actually picture Chalamet pulling it off, just not in the same way he plays the character.
“I think he would make a great Spider-Man,” Holland said. “I think he would be a lot more brooding version of the character and maybe I got Dune!”
He didn’t stop there. Holland went on to imagine what his own take on Paul Atreides might look like, joking that his version of Dune “would be about a blundering idiot running through the sand!”
The swap makes for a fun thought experiment precisely because the two performances couldn’t be more different. Holland’s Peter Parker has always leaned into youthful energy and comic timing, the kid who cracks jokes mid swing and panics under pressure. Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, by contrast, is quiet, intense, and weighed down by prophecy from his first scene onward.
Swapping those tones would flip both franchises on their heads. A more brooding Spider-Man would push Peter Parker closer to the tortured hero archetype fans associate with characters like Batman, while Holland playing Paul would strip away nearly all the gravity that makes the Dune saga work. It’s the kind of casting swap that sounds harmless on paper but would completely reshape the DNA of both stories.
For now, both actors remain firmly attached to their respective universes, with Holland continuing as Spider-Man in the MCU and Chalamet’s Dune saga still unfolding on screen.
