Gears of War: E-Day has been one of the most anticipated games of 2026. For PlayStation fans who were hoping to get in on the action, Microsoft just delivered some news that is going to sting.

The announcement came during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 and caught many people off guard. For the past year or so, the general assumption in gaming circles was that E-Day would follow the same multiplatform path Microsoft had been carving out for its first-party titles. That assumption just got corrected in the clearest possible terms.

Gears of War: E-Day Confirmed as a Permanent Xbox Console Exclusive

During the showcase, Xbox head Asha Sharma confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will be an Xbox console exclusive. It is coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC, but not PS5. Microsoft was deliberate in making sure nobody misread the situation, stating on its official website that the game is not a timed exclusive. PS5 players should not expect it to arrive on Sony’s platform at a later date.

“Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be Xbox console exclusives,” Microsoft confirmed. “These are not timed exclusives. Games already announced for multi-platform releases will stick to that plan. We’re committed to investing in and growing Xbox both on console and beyond.”

The decision is a sharp reversal from the direction Microsoft had been heading. The Gears franchise had only recently made its PlayStation debut with Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the original game released on PS5 in 2025, which led many to believe E-Day could follow suit. That move now looks more like a one-off than a trend.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb added another layer to the story. According to Grubb, E-Day was going to be on PS5, but the decision to pull it was made recently. He also noted that a fully completed PS5 version of the game exists. “So yeah, there’s a basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive,” Grubb said.

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original game, following younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the first Locust invasion on Emergence Day. The game launches on Xbox and PC on October 6, 2026.
