Cynthia Erivo has no shortage of ambition. Fresh off Wicked and currently performing a one-woman Dracula show in London, she is already looking ahead at her next dream role. And it is one Marvel fans have been talking about for years.
In a new interview with Variety, Erivo revealed that playing Storm in the MCU is something she has wanted since childhood. “A childhood fantasy of mine,” she called it, a description that goes beyond casual interest and signals a genuine, long-held connection to the character.
Why Cynthia Erivo and Storm Make Sense
Storm, also known as Ororo Munroe, is one of the most powerful and iconic figures in Marvel Comics. A weather-manipulating mutant and longtime leader of the X-Men, she has never been given a proper big-screen showcase. The mainline version of Storm has not yet debuted in the MCU, and fans have been waiting for Marvel to get the casting right.
Erivo has previously spoken at length about what draws her to the role. “I really want to play Storm. I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is, and all of that inner turmoil that she has, so I think there’s a world in which we could, you know, do something like that,” she said. It is a perspective that goes straight to what has always been missing from previous screen versions of the character.
There are reports that Marvel Studios has met with Erivo about the role, though nothing has been officially confirmed. The MCU is actively developing its X-Men introduction, with Michael Lesslie currently working on the script, and a director still being sought. Erivo is not the only name in the conversation, either. Janelle Monáe has also expressed interest in the role, and fans have pointed to Keke Palmer and Dominique Jackson as further options.
But Erivo’s combination of star power, range, and vocal ability puts her in a category of her own. Someone who can carry the emotional weight of Storm’s backstory while commanding every scene she is in is exactly what the MCU needs when it finally pulls the trigger on the X-Men.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, with the X-Men film still in early development.
