After seven years away from theaters, Star Wars is back on the big screen, and the heart of it all is still the same: a small green kid and the armored warrior who refuses to leave him behind.

But in ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’, it’s Grogu who does the not-leaving. Here’s a full breakdown of what happens to Baby Yoda by the end of the film.

The Poison, the Palace, and the Pivot

The final act begins after the Hutt Twins capture Din Djarin on Nal Hutta, forcing him to fight a massive Dragonsnake as punishment for breaking his contract. Grogu and the Anzellans help him escape, but the Dragonsnake poisons Djarin fatally.

With the escape ship too small for Mando, he stays behind to cover their escape, watching them fly away as the poison spreads through his body.

This is where Grogu’s defining moment lands. He refuses to leave, tending to the dying bounty hunter through the night alone until a local fisherman provides an antidote that saves Djarin’s life. The child who once needed protecting becomes the protector.

With Djarin recovered, the duo storms the Hutt Twins’ palace, tearing through their droid security force. Mando battles bounty hunter Embo while Grogu frees Rotta from captivity. Rotta sends the Hutt Twins crashing into the Dragonsnake pit, and Grogu uses the Force to pull him back to safety.

Where Grogu and Mando End Up

Back at Adelphi Base, Mando and Grogu say goodbye to Rotta, who stays to join the New Republic. Colonel Ward reminds Djarin he’s now part of something bigger.

The film closes with Grogu taking the controls of their newly acquired Razor Crest and blasting off into lightspeed.

The ending is deliberately open, and a potential Season 4, while unconfirmed, could pick up with the duo in virtually any capacity. For now, Grogu’s arc is settled: he’s no longer just a foundling. He’s a partner.
