Adam Driver was at Cannes this weekend promoting Paper Tiger, but the conversation quickly shifted when he was asked about claims Lena Dunham made about him in her new memoir, Famesick.
When a reporter brought up the allegations during a press conference, Driver offered a brief, dry response:
“I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.”
What Lena Dunham Alleges in Famesick
Dunham’s latest memoir, released April 14 by Random House, explores the challenges of fame, chronic illness, and the pressures that accompanied her rise in Hollywood.
The book focuses heavily on the years between 2010 and 2020, when Dunham was filming Girls while simultaneously dealing with the mental and physical toll of public scrutiny and health struggles.
According to excerpts from the memoir, Dunham describes Driver as “verbally aggressive” and physically intimidating at times during production. She recounts one alleged incident in which Driver became frustrated after she failed to memorize her lines and threw a chair “at the wall next to” her.
Dunham also writes about filming their first intimate scene together, claiming her carefully planned blocking “went out the window” as Driver allegedly became more physically forceful during the performance.
She admits, however, that her relationship with Driver felt complicated. While she often viewed him as “physically imposing,” she also described moments where he was “protective” and “loving.”
Adam Driver Keeps His Response Brief
Driver’s response at Cannes drew laughter from the crowd, but the meaning behind it was difficult to ignore.
Rather than directly address Dunham’s claims, the actor suggested that if he ever chooses to tell his side of the story, it would happen on his own terms and in his own time.
The remark also seemed to suggest that Driver may eventually release a memoir of his own, though he offered no further details.
Given Driver’s famously private personality, the restrained response was not entirely surprising. Throughout his career, the actor has largely avoided public controversy and rarely comments in detail on personal matters.
For now, Driver appears content to let Famesick speak for itself while keeping his own thoughts private.
At the moment, the situation stands with Dunham sharing her perspective across hundreds of pages, while Driver answered with just a single sentence.
