Salma Hayek Pinault directed Prince, and she’s the only person who can say that. During a recent late night appearance, she opened up about what it was actually like calling the shots on one of music’s most notoriously particular artists.
Hayek Reveals She’s One Of The Few To Direct Prince
Speaking with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Fallon brought up that Hayek Pinault had directed Prince in a music video, joking that normally it would be Prince calling the shots. Hayek Pinault confirmed she was the exception.
“No one directs Prince. I did,” she noted.
Hayek directed Prince’s 2005 music video “Te Amo Corazon,” from his album 3121, marking one of the only times the notoriously hands-on artist worked under someone else’s direction. She said Prince genuinely listened to her notes on set, even if he occasionally pushed back.
“He did listen to me,” Hayek said. “Sometimes he would put up a fight, but I would take him on. I got him in the pool, swimming in the pool. I would tone down the makeup, which was a whole thing.”
The most memorable part of the shoot, according to Hayek, came after filming wrapped. She said Prince had one request once he’d followed her direction for the day.
“He said, ‘Okay, now can you please make me some scrambled eggs?’ He liked me cooking. He loved scrambled eggs. He was very picky with the food,” she recalled.
Prince passed away in 2016, but for Hayek, the memory of trading recipes and stories with him in her kitchen remains one she still holds onto tightly.
