A trivia segment from Hits Radio put the SNL UK cast to the test, asking them to guess the real first name behind one of the show’s most recognizable American alumni.
The Cast Guesses Before Learning The Answer On Camera
In the clip, the cast members took turns throwing out guesses before anyone landed on the real answer. One panelist guessed “Andrew,” calling it a solid attempt, while another jokingly floated “J. J. J. J. Bimkins” before being told the answer wasn’t even close.
“It’s actually David. That’s so strange. David Samberg. David A. J. Samberg,” he said.
The reveal is accurate. Samberg was born David A. J. Samberg and has said in past interviews that he asked his parents to start calling him Andy at age five, a nickname that stuck for the rest of his career.
The panel’s confusion captured just how thoroughly “Andy” erased David long before Hollywood entered the frame. To outsider comedians, the swap looks like standard-issue stagecraft, but for Samberg, it was the stubborn decision of a five-year-old child who refused to answer to the name on his birth certificate.
That juvenile impulse ended up anchoring an era. Decades before The Lonely Island rewrote digital distribution or Saturday Night Live turned pre-recorded sketches into mainstream viral hits, the moniker had already settled into his daily life.
By the time he walked onto the set of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to play Jake Peralta, David Samberg had been forgotten for nearly thirty years, replaced entirely by a playground preference that became a comedy empire.
