Domhnall Gleeson Addresses the Idea of Returning to About Time

Richard Curtis built About Time around a promise that no matter how much time travel got tangled up in the plot, Tim and Mary would end up together. That certainty was the whole point. But more than a decade later, Domhnall Gleeson is entertaining the idea of picking the story back up.

Speaking with Collider, Gleeson made clear his loyalty to Curtis extends well past this one role.

“If Richard asked me to work with him, I would say yes, regardless of what it was, but yeah, certainly,” he said.

He followed that up by explaining why Curtis considered the story finished in the first place.

“I think he told all the story he had to tell for that movie,” Gleeson added. “And one of the things he said was that it was one of the only films he made where at the end the central couple probably do stay together forever. He doesn’t know that in the other ones that that would necessarily be the case, whereas he felt it wasn’t about time.”

But even with that sense of closure, Gleeson didn’t rule out a reunion.

“So I don’t know how much drama there is there, but I would absolutely love to work with him or Bill and Rachel, all those people again,” he concluded.

When the interviewer floated a potential direction, Tim and Mary navigating parenthood, bringing Rachel McAdams back alongside Gleeson, the actor immediately pointed to the one major thread Curtis left untouched the first time around: Mary never actually discovering that Tim can travel through time.

“I think what you would have to do is have her find out that he can travel in time, because I think that was the one thing in that film that we didn’t find out, and I think that could be really interesting,” he said.

That detail, kept from Mary for the entire runtime of the original film, is the kind of unresolved thread that could justify revisiting a story Curtis otherwise considers complete.

Nothing suggests a script or a follow-up is actually in motion. But Gleeson has now put a specific idea on the table, and it’s one that plays directly off About Time‘s central twist.
