When the X-Men and X-Force arrived to intercept him, Gambit ambushed the group and turned his mind control on Nightcrawler mid-fight, then kidnapped Rogue for himself.
That’s the moment Kurt stopped being an ally and became a weapon. His usually warm golden eyes flared red under Apocalypse’s influence, and the acrobatic hero who normally protects his teammates suddenly fended off the entire combined roster of X-Men and X-Force by himself.
Gold Eyes, Red Eyes: How the Control Finally Broke
The fix came from an unlikely place: Rogue. Her powers initially failed against Gambit entirely, a detail that spooked her before she realized why. Once Xavier dove into Gambit’s mind and confirmed Apocalypse was the one steering the ship, it became a rescue mission instead of a fight.
Rogue reached Remy directly, pulling the real Gambit back to the surface and severing Apocalypse’s grip. The moment that connection broke, Nightcrawler’s eyes shifted back to gold, and the fog lifted just as fast as it had rolled in.
It’s a small detail with big implications. Kurt’s body was a casualty of Apocalypse’s endgame, not proof that his loyalty ever wavered, but it’s also a reminder of how far Apocalypse’s reach extends when he’s hunting for a new host.
