Sony is facing brutal backlash this week after confirming the end of physical PlayStation discs, and Domino’s UK just made sure the internet won’t let it go.
Sony announced that physical discs for all new PlayStation games will be phased out starting in January 2028, framing the move as a response to shifting consumer habits as digital purchases continue to outpace physical media. The backlash was immediate, with longtime fans mourning the loss of ownership, resale value, and the simple joy of browsing a shelf of games. For a lot of players, this felt like the final nail in physical media’s coffin on PlayStation.
Domino’s UK had already taken a shot at the news with a one-line jab that went viral: “makes about as much sense as us changing to digital pizzas.”
Domino’s Escalates With A Mock “Official Statement”
Then the chain escalated things further, posting what it billed as an official statement. It announced that as of April 1, 2027, Domino’s UK would cease production of physical pizzas entirely and shift to digital pizzas only, framing the decision as a response to “trends in the gaming industry.” Customers, the statement joked, would instead download the full range of Domino’s pizza codes and enjoy them “in an entirely virtual sense.”
The chain followed that up with another jab aimed at its own branding, joking that its “much-loved ‘Domin-oh-hoo-hoo’ catchphrase” would need to be updated to “Domin-oh-hoo-whose-dumb-idea-was-this.”
This isn’t Domino’s first run-in with Sony recently either. Weeks earlier, the chain took a shot at “God of War Laufey” over the exclusion of Kratos as the lead character, a joke popular enough to earn a rare direct reply from Sony Santa Monica Studio itself.
For now, actual physical pizzas are safe. Sony’s physical discs, on the other hand, officially start disappearing in January 2028.
