The King of Prism franchise has been building momentum for a decade, and just when fans thought the hype couldn’t climb any higher, the announcement everyone was waiting for finally dropped.

The news came during the “King of Prism Super Live Prism Tours!” event, where it was revealed that production has officially begun on King of Prism -Tri-Star Act-, a brand-new theatrical film in the franchise. For a series that has consistently rewarded its passionate fanbase with new theatrical releases, this one feels different. The title alone signals something bigger is coming.

The last entry in the franchise, King of Prism -Your Endless Call- Minna Kirameke! Prism Tours, opened in June 2025 and became the franchise’s highest-grossing film with 1.2 billion yen, roughly US$7.4 million. That kind of box office success doesn’t just justify a follow-up, it demands one. And Tri-Star Act looks like the creative team is swinging for something fresh.

King of Prism -Tri-Star Act- Is Shifting the Competition Into Three-Person Territory

The story is set during “Prism.3,” the competition specifically designed for trios performing the franchise’s signature Prism Shows. That’s a meaningful shift in scope. The franchise has always been about bonds and rivalries, but framing the entire competition around trio dynamics raises the emotional stakes in a way that feels genuinely exciting. The teaser tagline leans right into it: “Those bonds will be tested now.”

The teaser visual features Yukinojou, Kakeru, and Minato as the three characters front and center, confirming which relationships will carry the film’s emotional core. The visual was illustrated by returning character designer Mai Matsuura.

On the production side, this is very much a homecoming for the team that built the franchise. Masakazu Hishida returns as chief director at Tatsunoko Production, alongside scriptwriter Jou Aoba, character designer Mai Matsuura, CG director Yoshihiro Otobe, original Prism Jump designer Daisuke Katō, musical composer Rei Ishizuka, and sound supervisor Nobuto Kojima. The continuity there is significant. This isn’t a soft reboot or a handoff to a new creative team; it’s the same people who have shaped this franchise’s voice from the beginning returning to push it further.

What the Tri-Star Act Means for the Future of the Franchise

King of Prism started in January 2016 with King of Prism by Pretty Rhythm and has expanded through six entries, including theatrical films and an anime series. Each chapter has deepened the lore and widened the roster, but Tri-Star Act looks like it’s positioning itself as a turning point rather than a continuation of the status quo. A competition built around trios means alliances matter as much as individual brilliance, and the franchise has always done its best work when the personal relationships are the actual battleground.

No release date has been confirmed yet, but given the franchise’s track record of consistent theatrical momentum, this one will be worth watching closely when more details emerge.
