Jon Bernthal has offered a blunt assessment of where Frank Castle stands ahead of his return in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. While superhero stories often revolve around redemption, healing, or found family, Bernthal says the Punisher wants none of it.
Speaking during the film’s promotional campaign, the actor explained that Frank Castle remains comfortable in the darkness that has defined him for years. As The Punisher prepares to share the screen with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Bernthal made it clear that audiences should not expect his character to soften.
Frank Castle Is Still Embracing The Darkness
When ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026, it will bring together two of Marvel’s most recognizable New York heroes. Yet despite operating in the same city, Peter Parker and Frank Castle could hardly be more different.
Bernthal has spent the past decade portraying the grief-stricken vigilante across multiple Marvel projects, and he believes the character’s mindset has not fundamentally changed.
The actor described The Punisher as someone who has fully accepted the darkness in his life rather than trying to escape it.
“[He] is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” Bernthal said.
He expanded on that idea by rejecting the notion that Frank is searching for friendship, redemption, or emotional support.
“He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in,” Bernthal explained. “He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.”
That outlook sets up a natural clash with Spider-Man, whose approach to heroism sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. Peter Parker consistently refuses to kill his enemies and often searches for a path toward understanding or rehabilitation. Frank Castle relies on lethal force and rarely believes people deserve second chances.
Marvel has already leaned into that contrast while promoting the film. One piece of marketing featured The Punisher‘s iconic skull logo formed entirely from spider webs, highlighting the uneasy connection between the two characters.
The recently released trailer offered another glimpse of their dynamic. In one sequence, Spider-Man webs the barrel of Frank’s shotgun shut in an attempt to stop him from firing, only for the Punisher to pull the trigger anyway.
Despite their opposing methods, the characters share more similarities than might initially appear. Following the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Peter lives in near-total isolation after sacrificing his personal relationships to save the world. Frank’s entire mission stems from losing his own family and cutting himself off from normal life in the aftermath.
Whether Frank serves as a warning for Peter or Peter offers a glimpse of a different path for Frank remains to be seen. What Bernthal’s comments make clear, however, is that The Punisher is not interested in being rescued. If anything, he seems determined to venture even further into the darkness that has always defined him.
