David Harbour has finally spoken out about one of the messiest off-screen stories to surround Stranger Things in its entire ten-year run, and his account is both candid and painful to read.
The drama goes back to November 2025, when the U.K. Daily Mail published a report claiming that `Millie Bobby Brown` had filed a formal “harassment and bullying” complaint against Harbour ahead of filming the show’s fifth and final season. The story spread fast, with unnamed sources claiming there were “pages and pages of accusations” and that an internal investigation had gone on for months. For a franchise built on the real warmth between its cast, it was a genuinely shocking set of allegations.
Brown herself gave an indirect response months later. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she spoke glowingly about her bond with Harbour, describing their relationship as genuinely special and pointing to their father-daughter dynamic as one of the emotional cores of Season 5. It felt like a quiet denial, but Harbour had stayed largely silent. Until now.
David Harbour on the Millie Bobby Brown Harassment Report: “It Was False”
In a new interview with Variety published on June 10, Harbour addressed the Daily Mail story directly, and he did not mince words. He called the report false and described what reading it did to him personally.
“I had a breakdown,” he told the outlet.
Harbour has been open in the past about living with bipolar disorder, and he acknowledged in the interview that extreme stress has sometimes led to erratic behavior on his end. “Times of extreme stress can cause somewhat erratic behavior, and it’s embarrassing, and I’m ashamed of it,” he said. He also noted the timing felt particularly brutal, coming just a week after his ex-wife Lily Allen released her album West End Girl, which contained pointed criticism of the actor.
As for what actually happened between him and Brown, Harbour framed it as something far more ordinary than the tabloid headlines suggested. “It’s simple. It was just a simple rupture-and-repair thing that, once we cleared everybody out of the way and talked to each other, we’re fine,” he said. He put it in the context of any long-term working relationship: “It’s a show that went on for 10 years. We worked together for 10 years during her formative teenage years, playing father and daughter. I don’t know if people have families and friends that you spend a lot of time with for 10 years, but you occasionally get in arguments, disagreements.” He added that once they spoke directly, everything was resolved, describing their current relationship as one of genuine affection.
It’s a reminder of how much damage a single unverified tabloid story can do, especially when it targets a relationship that fans have watched and cared about since Brown was eleven years old.` Harbour is currently promoting both Stranger Things Season 5 and his project DTF St. Louis during Emmy season.
Stranger Things Season 5 is currently streaming on Netflix.
