For years, Idris Elba‘s name has been at the center of one of Hollywood’s most persistent casting debates. Fans campaigned hard, the internet ran wild, and the speculation never really died down. Now, Elba is putting it all to rest with a bluntness that leaves no room for interpretation.

In a new interview with British GQ, the 53-year-old actor said the Bond rumors were simply never grounded in reality. “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” he told the outlet.

Idris Elba Breaks Down Why the Bond Rumors Were Never True

Elba acknowledged the flattery of being discussed for the role but pointed to a hard commercial reality behind his thinking.

“I was complimented by it,” he said. “And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

It’s a candid take, and one that reframes years of public conversation around the topic. The debate was never just about talent or fan enthusiasm; it was always tangled up with questions about global box office and audience expectations in certain markets.

Elba didn’t stop there. He also weighed in on what kind of Bond the franchise actually needs going forward. “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

The search for a new 007 is now officially underway. At the Masters of the Universe premiere in Los Angeles earlier this month, Elba confirmed he was never in contention, telling People, “I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”

Prolific casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on Game of Thrones and The Crown, is leading the charge for Amazon MGM Studios, who took creative control of the Bond franchise last year. The direction is clear: they are going younger, and the new era of Bond will be built around a fresh face.

For Elba, closing this chapter publicly seems intentional. After more than a decade of being asked the same question, he’s answered it potentially for the last time.
