Taira has been avoiding his classmates. He even changed the way he walks to school after replaying an awkward moment from the previous year in his head one too many times. The commute is not safe. Nothing is safe. Every route has a memory attached to it, and Taira has cataloged all of them.
Then a hailstorm hits and completely throws his carefully maintained system out of whack. Azuma chases after him in the middle of it, walks beside him through genuinely terrible weather, and does not once treat it like she is doing him a favor. She just does it because she wants to.
That is where his entire read on her falls apart. Every assumption Taira had built about what Azuma thought of him was never actually about her.
It was about what his own fear had been feeding him for months. She was not laughing at him. She was not indifferent. She just kept showing up, and he kept misreading it because believing someone might genuinely be in his corner felt too risky to accept. The small smile he gives afterward says everything his mouth cannot.
Yamada Says Her Name, and the Entire Internet Had to Lie Down
You and I Are Polar Opposites, Season 2, Episode 4 keeps the Yamada and Nishi section brief and does not need to stretch it. Yamada starts calling Nishi by her first name. Drops it into conversation like it costs him nothing. In Japan, that is nothing, and every single person watching felt the temperature shift immediately. Two syllables and suddenly everything between them reads differently.
Honda is watching all of this with the expression of someone who clocked the ending three episodes ago and is just waiting for everyone else to arrive. Valentine’s Day is coming, and she is already three moves ahead of both of them.
Honda’s Backstory Is What ‘You and I Are Polar Opposites’ Season 2 Episode 4 Actually Is
This is the part of You and I Are Polar Opposites Season 2 Episode 4 that people are going to keep talking about.
In middle school, Honda was the person everyone came to with their problems. Not because she was soft about it, but because she was honest. That honesty became the problem. People showed up wanting someone to validate decisions they had already made, and Honda kept telling them the truth instead.
When her answers were not what they ordered, they left frustrated. When she held her ground, things got ugly. It happened enough times that she decided the whole arrangement did not work in her favor and shut it down entirely. Kept her distance. Stopped letting people get close enough to expect things from her.
Then Nishi. Nishi did the one thing nobody before her had managed to do. She listened. Actually listened. Took the advice Honda gave her and went away and worked on herself instead of coming back with complaints or expecting Honda to carry the weight of her problems indefinitely. That was enough. One person doing the thing everyone else refused to do, and Honda let her in.
It reframes everything. The way Honda watches over Nishi, the way she nudges the Yamada situation forward, the quiet investment she has in how that relationship goes. She is not a plot device moving the main couple toward their endpoints. She is someone who got burned enough times to close herself off completely, only to find one person worth opening back up for.
Everything she does in this show makes more sense now, and the show did it in about five minutes of runtime without making a speech about any of it.
Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Taira is one hailstorm closer to admitting something to himself. Yamada said a name out loud. Honda already has a plan. Episode 4 does not hurry any of it and does not need to.
