Tom Holland just gave fans a glimpse into his family life, and it’s exactly as wholesome as you’d hope. The actor recently opened up about the moment his mother watched his performance in Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey for the first time, and her reaction has fans grinning.
The Odyssey marks one of the biggest swings of Holland’s career so far. He plays Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus, in Nolan’s massive IMAX adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. The film reunites Holland with an ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o, all under the direction of a filmmaker known for pushing his actors into unfamiliar territory.
That pressure clearly weighed on Holland during filming. He’s already spoken about panicking on his first day on set, worried that Nolan hated his performance simply because the director kept calling ‘cut,’ not realizing it was just the IMAX film reels running out every three minutes.
Tom Holland’s Mother Shares Her Honest Odyssey Reaction
So when it came time for his own mother to watch the finished film, Holland clearly wasn’t sure what to expect. As it turns out, the reaction couldn’t have been sweeter or funnier.
“After the movie finished, the credits are rolling, there’s not a dry eye in the house, then my mom puts her hand on my knee & goes: ‘I didn’t realize you had such a big part on this!’,” he said during an appearance on France TV.
It’s the kind of comment only a proud parent could deliver with a straight face, and it’s easy to picture the room getting emotional over Telemachus’s journey before Holland’s mom cut straight to supportive honesty.
Holland has been candid throughout press for The Odyssey about how demanding the shoot was, and how much respect he gained for Nolan’s process along the way. He’s called working with Nolan and producer Emma Thomas one of the best experiences of his career, crediting their meticulous approach for pushing him creatively.
With a cast this stacked, it’s no surprise even someone as recognizable as Holland could disappear into an ensemble that includes Damon, Hathaway, and Zendaya, enough that his own mother needed a reminder of just how much screen time her son actually had.
