Tom Cruise has built a career on doing his own stunts in the air, from flying real aircraft to skydiving for blockbuster scenes. But his first time in a fighter jet didn’t go the way a Hollywood hero’s should. Before he was Maverick, Cruise was a rookie whose stomach couldn’t handle the punishment of military-grade flight.
Tom Cruise Admits His First Fighter Jet Flight Was a Disaster
Looking back four decades after originating his legendary role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Cruise, 64, opened up about the grueling physical reality of filming the 1986 classic Top Gun.
“I remember my first time in a fighter jet, I was flying an A-4,” Cruise recalled on Jennifer Hudson Show. “And I really puked my guts out the first time.”
Rather than letting motion sickness ground him, Cruise refused to let the physical toll sabotage production. Instead, he doubled down on adapting to the extreme aerial maneuvers.
“No, that didn’t deter me,” Cruise explained. “I was like, ‘Okay, I got to figure this out. I don’t want to keep puking in the back of this airplane. We got to shoot a movie.’ And then on the first day on the F-14, I puked again.
“But I had two other flights the rest of that day, and it was just magnificent. The whole experience was really special, incredible cast, beautiful director, everything. It was just magical.”
That relentless dedication ultimately reshaped aviation filmmaking, culminating in the historic box-office dominance of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. With Top Gun 3 officially in development, Cruise teased that fans can expect more signature high-octane thrills, iconic music, and Maverick right back in the cockpit, minus the motion sickness bags.
