Tim Robbins has taken Bernard Holland into entirely new territory throughout Silo Season 3, bringing the character’s long-simmering evolution to a head just as the season approaches its pivotal tenth episode.
Across the Apple TV+ sci-fi drama’s earlier run, Bernard stood as the calculating Head of IT and Mayor of Silo 18, an authoritarian gatekeeper willing to suppress dangerous truths to preserve order at any cost. Yet, as his motives have grown more complicated this season, Robbins revealed that even he was kept guessing about the character’s trajectory when he originally took the role.
Graham Yost’s Early Warning About Silo’s Bernard Holland
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Howritz, Robbins said showrunner Graham Yost gave him a simple but pointed piece of guidance about the character from the very beginning.
“The character, as Graham described him to me, was a powerful person, but he said, have patience with it. He’s not he is not what he seems to be.”
That instruction turned out to be exactly on the mark. Robbins said Fernando’s arc pays off in a major way by Season 3, calling it one of the more satisfying transformations he’s gotten to play.
“And he came through with that in Season 3. There was such a great turn. And it’s everything you want to do as an actor. Your arc starts here and gets into this weird place over here. Usually arcs are like this. It’s not very much of an arc. But this one was magnificent.”
Robbins also praised the experience of working alongside Common, Rebecca Ferguson, and Harriet Walter throughout the show’s run, along with the production’s overall treatment of its cast and crew.
He credited Apple specifically for backing scripts that leaned fully into the show’s dystopian premise, calling the studio’s respect for strong writing and direction rare among major streamers right now.
