A new rumor out of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is raising a question fans haven’t had to seriously ask in years: what if Peter Parker moves on from MJ?

According to Marvel insider Daniel Richtman, Brand New Day will reportedly introduce a blonde woman who lives in Peter’s apartment building and develops romantic feelings for him. That detail alone would be enough to set fan forums on fire. But the comparison that came attached to it is what’s really got people talking.

The rumor draws a direct line to a character many fans have quietly championed for two decades. Ursula Ditkovich, the kind-hearted neighbor from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, won fans over with her warmth toward Peter at a time when almost everything else in his life was falling apart. Many fans argued she would have made a better girlfriend for Peter than MJ. The idea that Brand New Day might be tapping into that energy is not a stretch.

Who Could This Blonde Neighbor Actually Be?

Fan theories are already pointing in multiple directions. Some believe it could be Ursula Ditkovich herself, played by Mageina Tovah, returning from the Raimi films. Others are floating Gwen Stacy and Felicia Hardy, better known as Black Cat, as candidates for the mystery character.

The Gwen Stacy theory has the most traction right now. Kiernan Shipka has been rumored to potentially appear in the film as Gwen and was reportedly spotted on set. Stacy has previously been played in live-action by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3 and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man films. Casting a new Gwen within the MCU continuity would be a major swing, but Brand New Day seems to be swinging for exactly that kind of emotional reset.

The crucial piece here is that this new character isn’t being positioned as a clean replacement for MJ. Richtman adds that Peter is still in love with Zendaya’s MJ in the film, even with this new neighbor in the picture. That push-pull is exactly what made the Ursula dynamic work in Spider-Man 2. Peter clearly had feelings for MJ, but Ursula represented the simpler, quieter life he kept walking away from. Brand New Day appears to be rebuilding that same tension from scratch.

Tom Holland has said he personally pushed for Brand New Day to be a street-level story, combing through fan feedback online and advocating for a film that felt relatable rather than world-saving. Bringing in a neighbor who grounds Peter in his daily life fits that vision completely. It’s hard to get more street-level than the person who lives down the hall.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
