Nami has been the Straw Hat Pirates’ navigator for almost 30 years. She has had her backstory, her moments, her fights. But a standalone story where she is just Nami, not the thief, not the navigator, not the one yelling at Luffy about money, that has never happened in anime form until now. One Piece Heroines airs July 5, and here is what the whole thing actually is.
The One Piece Heroines Light Novel Explained
One Piece Heroines started as a light novel written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Sayaka Suwa, published under Shueisha’s Jump J-Books imprint in 2021. Two volumes, ten chapters total, each one a standalone story about a different female character doing something that never made it into Oda’s original manga.
Nami ends up in a fashion show that changes how she thinks about style. Robin helps Koala and Sabo decode an ancient tablet. Vivi gets caught up in something involving an unsolicited love letter. Perona, Zoro, and Mihawk fight over the last bottle of wine, which is somehow the most believable thing in the entire novel.
None of these are in the manga. None of them ever were. That is the whole point. These are original stories for characters the main series never had room to slow down for, and for a franchise running 30 years with a cast this size, that is actually kind of a big deal.
Viz Media licensed the novels in 2024 and got both English volumes out through 2025. The anime adaptation was announced at One Piece Day on August 10, 2025. Haruka Kamatami is directing for Toei, Takashi Kojima, the same person behind Episode 1015 and certain Egghead Arc ending visuals, is handling character designs, and Momoka Toyoda wrote the script.
Why One Piece Heroines Is Only One Episode
Here is where it got complicated. When the official One Piece account confirmed in February that the anime would be a single episode adapting only Nami’s chapter, the reaction was not great. The novel has ten chapters. Fans had assumed at minimum a handful would be animated. What they got was one.
The story follows Nami buying a poorly made pair of shoes that hurt her feet. She goes back to the shop, understandably annoyed, and meets a designer named Lebno, who tells her he will remake the shoes entirely but only if she models them at an upcoming fashion show.
The actual repairs get handled by a shoemaker named Miucha, and the whole thing turns into something far removed from anything that happens in the main series. Maaya Sakamoto voices Miucha, and Takehito Koyasu, already known to One Piece fans as Kuzan, voices Lebno.
Robin shows up in the episode, too, even though she was not in Nami’s original novel chapter. Her own chapter does not get adapted, but Toei brought her in anyway, and her character design for the spinoff already has people talking.
The fans who wanted Vivi, Hancock, Perona, and the rest to each get their own animated moments are looking at this and doing the math. The source material exists. The designs exist. The only thing stopping more episodes is whether the one released on July 5 performs enough to justify coming back for the rest.
One Piece Heroines premiered on Fuji TV in Japan on July 5, 2026, occupying the regular One Piece broadcast slot. Netflix will be available worldwide on July 11, while Crunchyroll streamed it the same day as the Japanese broadcast.
