John Stewart closes out Lanterns by naming himself the Green Lantern of Earth. Whether the Guardians would ever sign off on that title is another question, and showrunner Chris Mundy‘s answer isn’t a comfortable one.
Chris Mundy Says John Stewart Is “More or Less Blackmailing” the Guardians

In the finale, John reclaims Hal Jordan’s ring and an unsanctioned lantern. He then calls Guy Gardner to Rushville and claims Earth as his own, all without the Guardians’ approval.
Entertainment Weekly asked Mundy whether John can technically still call himself a Green Lantern, given that he stepped away from the Guardians and the lantern in play is so new and specific. Mundy said the writers considered it “a little bit,” and that it’s “definitely something that could be addressed if and when the show moves forward.”
“We thought of him as being Green Lantern of Earth, but of course he’s more or less blackmailing the Guardians at the moment,” he said. “So it’s both an empowered and precarious situation all at once.”
While Mundy didn’t say what the Guardians stand to lose, he does suggest John isn’t working with their blessing. He’s working because they have reasons not to move against him.
That’s a shaky foundation for a hero, and it fits the finale. John’s new oath puts fear inside the Green Lantern creed, and his title carries the same unease. He chose the ring, but nobody has agreed to let him keep it.
That leaves a second season with a built-in conflict. John has the ring and the title, but whatever is keeping the Guardians in check is also what could give way.
