According to Lars Anderson’s forthcoming biography, Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, the supermodel handed Brady the candid note following the New England Patriots’ crushing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2018 Super Bowl. Rather than focusing on gridiron heartbreak, the letter laid bare Bündchen’s growing exhaustion from shouldering the domestic load while living in the shadow of his football career.
“She explained that their marriage wasn’t working,” Anderson writes in an excerpt published by the Daily Mail. “She needed more of him, more of his time, more of his attention, more of his heart.”
Anderson details how Bündchen grew increasingly frustrated with Brady’s inability to emotionally disconnect from work even when physically present at home.
“Not responding to text messages on his constantly buzzing cell phone or replaying a game in his mind,” Anderson explains. “She needed more help with the kids. She needed the chance to sleep in just a few days a week. She needed more time for her own career.”
A former teammate of Brady’s corroborated the deepening divide, noting that Bündchen, already an established global superstar in her own right, felt their partnership had grown lopsided.
“She was getting tired of living on Tom’s schedule and being somewhat in his shadow during football season,” the teammate alleges in the book. “She has a lot of pride, too. And, I mean, how many times did you see Tom supporting her career? There clearly were imbalances there.”
While the couple attended counseling and Brady kept the letter tucked away in a drawer to reread on quiet nights as a reminder to invest in his family, the underlying strain never fully resolved. Bündchen officially pulled the plug on their 13-year marriage in October 2022, shortly after Brady reversed his initial NFL retirement decision.
