George R.R. Martin fans have been asking the same question for years: how far along is he really on the next Dunk & Egg book? Now the man running HBO‘s adaptation has weighed in, and it sounds like there’s real movement.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been positioned as one of the more faithful adaptations in the Game of Thrones universe, drawing directly from Martin’s novellas about the young hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. That source material only goes so far though, and the show has always been racing against the reality that Martin is still writing new installments in the series.

Showrunner Ira Parker confirmed Martin is actively working on the fourth Dunk & Egg book, and teased where the story is headed.
“Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location,” Parker said, via THR.
That cool location isn’t a total mystery. Martin has floated the working title “The She-Wolves of Winterfell” for the fourth novella, and has described it as sending Dunk and Egg north to Winterfell, where they cross paths with the generations of Stark women who inspired the title. It would mark the first time the series steps outside the Dornish and Riverlands settings the show has stuck to so far, giving Parker a very different backdrop to work with.
It’s also a meaningful jump for the wider mythology. A Stark-centric entry ties Dunk and Egg’s wandering adventures directly into the family that anchors the entire Song of Ice and Fire timeline, decades before Ned, Robb, or Sansa ever enter the picture. For a show that has largely kept its focus small and personal, a trip to Winterfell signals Parker and Martin are ready to let the story’s scope grow alongside its budget.
Parker also laid out his vision for the show’s future, revealing plans to keep Egg as a boy for four to five seasons before hitting pause. “Five is the last story point of Egg as a boy. So it’s a very natural ending place for us to take a break and come back when Dexter is older,” he explained, referencing young star Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg alongside Peter Claffey’s Dunk.
That structure lines up with the source material itself. The published novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, all take place while Egg is still a child, and Martin has long said future entries will eventually age him up as Dunk’s story pushes toward his fateful role in Westerosi history.
Building in a natural break for Dexter to grow up mirrors how Game of Thrones handled its own child actors, giving the production room to breathe instead of forcing a workaround.
For now, the focus stays on what’s already confirmed. Season two of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently filming, adapting Martin’s second novella The Sworn Sword, with a premiere date still to be announced.
