Black Torch finally made its anime debut, and Episode 1 keeps things simple. It introduces its world without overwhelming the audience and ends on a note that makes the next episode hard to ignore. It may not reinvent the shounen formula, but it knows how to make a solid first impression.

Jiro Makes an Easy First Impression

The first episode spends most of its time introducing Jiro, and that’s exactly what it should do. Before monsters, powers, and secret organizations take over, the series makes sure viewers understand who its protagonist is. Jiro is someone who cannot ignore anyone in trouble, whether it is a person or a stray animal. His ability to communicate with animals immediately sets him apart, but it never feels like the only thing that defines him.

One of the episode’s best moments comes through a surprisingly simple line: “Being different is actually a beautiful thing.” It is not presented as some dramatic lesson. Instead, it quietly reflects Jiro’s entire character. He never tries to change who he is just because other people think he is strange.

The relationship between Jiro and his father also adds a nice touch. Their conversations feel natural, especially when his father gets frustrated over Jiro constantly getting into fights. It is a small detail, but moments like these make the characters feel more believable before the story dives into its supernatural side.

The opening sequence is another highlight. It carries the right amount of energy without revealing too much, and after finishing the episode, it already feels like something worth revisiting for hidden details later in the season.

Rago Turns a Good Premiere Into an Exciting One

Everything changes the moment Rago enters the story. At first, he seems like another cat that Jiro decides to protect, but that impression disappears almost instantly after his true identity as a mononoke is revealed. From there, the episode wastes no time raising the stakes.

The battle that follows does not last very long, but it accomplishes everything it needs to. Jiro quickly realizes that courage alone is not enough to win, and the gap between him and his opponent becomes obvious. That is what makes Rago’s decision to merge with him so satisfying. The transformation arrives without unnecessary buildup and completely changes the momentum of the fight. Within moments, the monster that looked impossible to defeat is completely overwhelmed.

The final scene introduces Ichika, who immediately gives the impression that she belongs to a much larger world that Jiro knows nothing about. Her appearance leaves several questions unanswered, but that works in the episode’s favor. Instead of explaining everything, Black Torch chooses to build curiosity.

Episode 1 succeeds because it never tries to do too much at once. It introduces a likable lead, establishes an interesting partnership between Jiro and Rago, and ends by opening the door to a much bigger story. It is a confident beginning that gives viewers enough reasons to return for Episode 2, which releases on Saturday, July 11.
