Genius Girlfriend premiered August 2 on iQIYI and 28 episodes later it has cemented itself as one of the better campus romances of 2026 while also being one of the more frustrating ones.
The main couple takes forever. The side couples are doing laps around them. Dr. Shen is suffering. And Lin Zhixia is genuinely, refreshingly, actually smart in a way female leads in this genre almost never are. It is a lot to hold at once and the show manages it more often than not.
Lin Zhixia Is the Female Lead Campus Romances Have Been Waiting For
Start here because it is the thing that makes everything else worth talking about. Lin Zhixia, played by Tian Xiwei, is a genius who is written like a genius actually behaves rather than like a drama’s idea of what a genius looks like.
She is not brilliant as a personality trait the show announces once and then forgets. She is brilliant in the way she moves through problems, handles situations, navigates people she has never had any practice navigating because she grew up without close friends. The workplace scene where she becomes unconscious and the contrast between how Shen and Yubai respond to it is the clearest demonstration of this.
Shen’s instinct is to bring in the two best people from the mathematics department. That is a completely rational response if you know Zhixia professionally.
Yubai’s instinct is to prioritize her health and let her handle her own work because he knows that is what she would want. Zhixia’s brother watching both of them and clocking the difference is the scene that tells you everything about who understands her and who still has catching up to do. The show earns that distinction rather than just asserting it and that is rarer than it sounds.
Tian Xiwei is the reason this works as well as it does. Several reviewers on MyDramaList noted that this is among her strongest performances and watching the show it is hard to argue.
She does not play Zhixia as the standard socially awkward genius. She plays her as someone who is simply operating on a different channel from most people around her and is genuinely trying to figure out how to bridge that gap. The warmth underneath the reserve comes through without the show forcing it.
Yubai and Zhixia: Right People, Wrong Pace
Jiang Yubai and Lin Zhixia are childhood friends turned deskmates turned the last couple in the show to actually say what they mean to each other out loud, which is both the most predictable thing about this drama and the most annoying. The pre-existing emotional foundation is there. The chemistry between Hu Yitian and Tian Xiwei is warm and genuine. The show knows what it has.
And then it drags the confession arc out to a degree that tests your patience significantly. The jealousy between Yubai and Dr. Shen is entertaining for about three episodes and then it just keeps going.
Both of them could have confessed considerably earlier and chose not to for reasons that feel more like plot mechanics than actual character logic. By the time the moment finally arrives you are happy it happened but you have also spent several episodes wanting to shake both of them.
Hu Yitian has faced the standard criticism for this kind of role, specifically that he looks too old for a high school setting, and that is visible from episode one. It does not sink the performance but it sits in the background of every school scene in a way that is hard to unsee once you notice it.

Baihui and Zeqiu: The Couple That Did Everything Right With Half the Screen Time
Jin Baihui and Lin Zeqiu are the first to confess and they do it with fewer scenes than any other couple in the show. The chemistry between Vivienne Tien and Wu Jiakai is effortless in a way that makes every moment they share feel natural rather than constructed.
The scene where Baihui finds out Zeqiu has already planned everything, school, hospital, savings, wedding gown, ring, the entire future mapped out, is the kind of romantic moment that lands because it is so specific. He did not just know he wanted to be with her. He had already figured out how.
The Ballet Hymn scene where Baihui realizes Zeqiu had joined all the pages together, and the meteor shower scene where he pauses it because she is making a wish, are the two moments that cemented them as the standout couple of the drama.
The consideration in both of those gestures is the whole character in action. He is not dramatic or flashy about how he feels. He just quietly accounts for her in everything he does and that is infinitely more compelling than any grand declaration.
Vivienne Tien and Wu Jiakai are now on the list of actors to watch for whatever comes next. They created more genuine chemistry with limited screen time than most drama couples manage across full lead arcs and both deserve leading roles immediately.
Qiyan and Tingting: The Goofy Ones Who Took the Longest to Figure It Out
Duan Qiyan and Tang Tingting are the entertainment couple of the drama and they earn that title completely. Their banter is consistently the funniest thing happening in any given episode.
They are probably the couple who had been in love with each other the longest without either of them understanding what that meant, which makes the irony of Tingting spending the whole show helping Zhixia understand her own feelings while completely missing her own particularly enjoyable.
They are the last to confess and the journey getting there is more fun than the confession itself. Tingting deserved a better proposal and the show knows it did not fully deliver on that.
The payoff did not match the buildup in the way it should have. But they worked out and given that several other romantic arcs in this show do not reach any kind of resolution, the fact that Qiyan and Tingting got their ending is something to be genuinely happy about.
Dr. Shen Fuxuan and the Storyline That Hurts the Most
Dr. Shen is not a couple entry because he never gets a couple. He is a separate conversation.
Shen suffered throughout this drama in ways that are disproportionate to what he actually did wrong. He liked someone who had known her person since childhood.
He never really got a fair shot at knowing Zhixia properly because Yubai was always there and that structural disadvantage was always going to determine the outcome regardless of who Shen was. He handled the loss with more dignity than the show gave him credit for.
The patient storyline is where the show becomes genuinely unbearable. The scene where she asks to be allowed to go outside for just one day is one of the few moments in all 28 episodes that becomes emotionally difficult to sit with rather than just dramatically engaging. Shen loses Zhixia, loses his patient, and walks away from the drama with nothing resolved romantically.
The restaurant boss, Su Mao, the guy interested in Baihui, all of them join Shen in the category of characters whose love stories the show simply did not finish.
The optimistic read is that Shen’s story is unfinished rather than over. He is the kind of character who deserves a second drama entirely. The realistic read is that the show gave him an enormous amount of pain and very little return on it. Both things are true at the same time.
Genius Girlfriend is a good campus romance with a genuinely intelligent female lead, two excellent side couples, and a main couple that takes long enough to get there that you feel the relief when they finally do. The Shen situation is unresolved in a way that lingers. Baihui and Zeqiu are the real stars of the show. And 2026 is absolutely Tian Xiwei’s year.
