What Is the Plot of Klara and the Sun?

Per Sony’s official synopsis, Klara is an Artificial Friend who “wants nothing more than to find the perfect home.” Her chance comes when she meets Josie, played by Mia Tharia, and the two quickly sense a connection.
Josie’s relationship with her mother, played by Amy Adams, is strained, and the family has been through a painful loss. But Klara’s innocence and loyalty start to heal them and bring some light into Josie’s life.
The film is set in a near future where some children are genetically “lifted” for an academic edge and often study alone at home. Parents buy Artificial Friends to keep them company. Klara is solar-powered, and she comes to treat the Sun almost like a god. As Josie’s health fails, Klara decides to risk something to save her.
Klara and the Sun (Book) Ending Explained: What Happens to Klara?

In the novel, Chrissie has a secret backup plan. If Josie dies, the artist Mr. Capaldi has been building a replica of her, and Klara is meant to learn Josie’s mannerisms and take her place. Klara doesn’t know this at first.
Klara believes the Sun can save Josie. She prays at a barn and promises to destroy the Cootings Machine, a pollution-spewing machine that blocks the Sun. With Josie’s father’s help, she finds it and destroys it. In doing so she drains fluid from her own head, which damages her.
Nothing happens at first. Klara returns to the barn and pleads again, pointing to the love between Josie and Rick. Days later, as Josie seems close to death, sunlight floods her room and she begins to recover. The novel never says whether the Sun really did it.
Josie grows up and leaves for college. Klara, no longer needed, ends up in a yard full of scrapped machines. When the old store manager visits, Klara isn’t bitter. She says she is glad of the life she had and sorts her memories into neat images in her mind.
The ending is quiet but cruel. Klara loved fully and was discarded anyway. But her own words suggest she never saw it as a loss. The tragedy is not that Klara lacked a human soul, but that she possessed one far more loyal and loving than the humans who discarded her.
