Tyler Perry movies rarely get warm reviews, but they almost always find an audience. His newest Netflix drama, , is following that pattern, with critics divided and viewers pushing it up the charts anyway.

The 108-minute drama touches on prison, survival, and second chances, and it has been hard to ignore since its release on October 2. Just over a week later, it is one of the most-watched movies on the platform.

According to FlixPatrol’s Netflix worldwide rankings for October 12, Doing Life is the second most-watched movie on the platform, sitting just behind ‘s , which leads with 905 points. It has a score of 595, ahead of Ice Age, Ice Age: Collision Course, and .

The film had already topped Netflix’s US movie chart on October 5, just three days after its premiere. Netflix’s own numbers show the same pull as it drew 9.3 million views and 16.8 million hours watched in its first three days, placing it third on the weekly Top 10, per What’s On Netflix.

Written, directed, and produced by Perry, the film follows Anika (Naomi Baker), a former corrections officer and single mother juggling money problems, a baby, and nursing school. Her life changes after she meets Carousel (Jay Reeves), an inmate who protects her during a violent prison riot. The two find an unlikely second chance in each other.

Critics have been divided about the movie. Brandon Yu of the New York Times took issue with Perry’s reliance on tired tropes, while Common Sense Media’s Jennifer Green gave the film 3 out of 5 and called it a Nicholas Sparks-style romance.

Fans, however, have been far more receptive and emotional about it, with many taking to social media over the weekend to say the film left them in tears. It holds a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb and arrives just weeks after Why Did I Get Married Again?, which Tyler Perry Studios says hit No. 1 on Netflix’s global English-language movie chart in its second week.

Whether Doing Life can close the gap on Animals will be the story to watch this week, and with Confabulation already on the way, Perry’s Netflix pipeline is far from empty.
