The Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing one of its most important character rivalries back into focus with Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series ‘VisionQuest’. As production on the project continues, Paul Bettany has now shared new details about reuniting with James Spader, who officially returns as Ultron for the first time since ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015).

Bettany’s latest comments suggest the series will explore a different side of the iconic Marvel villain. While Ultron originally appeared as a cold and destructive artificial intelligence determined to wipe out humanity, Bettany hinted that Spader’s new performance carries a far more entertaining energy this time around.

Speaking about working with Spader again, Bettany praised both the actor’s performance and their on-set chemistry.

“He’s so funny in this. It’s so delicious to watch him. And we loved working together. I loved it so much.”

The comments immediately sparked speculation about Ultron’s role in the upcoming series. Bettany’s description points toward a more theatrical or darkly comedic version of the character rather than the purely apocalyptic figure audiences saw in ‘Age of Ultron’.

The reunion between Vision and Ultron carries major significance in MCU history. Ultron originally created the vibranium body that later became Vision, intending to use it as his own ultimate form. Instead, the Avengers uploaded Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. program into the synthezoid body, transforming it into Vision. The conflict eventually ended with Vision destroying Ultron’s remaining sentry during the Battle of Sokovia after the two characters shared a philosophical debate about humanity’s flaws and beauty.

‘VisionQuest’ continues the storyline established in ‘WandaVision’ (2021). The series follows White Vision, the rebuilt version of the character created by S.W.O.R.D. after Wanda Maximoff restored his memories. The project reportedly focuses on Vision, attempting to rediscover his humanity while confronting the fragmented memories and unresolved consequences tied to his creation.

Marvel Studios has not revealed how Ultron returns in the series. The character could appear in a rebuilt physical form, survive as hidden code inside Vision’s systems, or emerge as a digital presence connected to Vision’s damaged memories.

The secrecy surrounding Ultron’s return has only increased anticipation for the series. With Bettany and Spader sharing the screen again after more than a decade, ‘VisionQuest’ is shaping into one of Marvel’s most psychologically driven Disney+ projects yet.
