Kelly Macdonald Explains Why Kerry Fled Gotham Before Rushville
Breaking down Episode 7 of HBO’s Lanterns, Macdonald opened up about peeling back the curtain on Kerry’s origins prior to arriving in the small town. The series primarily operates across two timelines, 2016 and 2026 but exploring Kerry’s younger days provided crucial context for the hardened lawwoman she would eventually become.
“I don’t have too much information outside of the fact she’s from Gotham,” Macdonald revealed to Collider. “There’s people that want to kill her, and she finds, she makes not a deal with the devil, but you know, she signs her life over basically to Rushville and to being there and protecting it, and it ends up being her family. So yeah, I think it is quite important.”
Stepping into that earlier era also gave Macdonald a rare visual departure from Kerry’s signature practical wardrobe.
“It was really nice to actually film sort of a slightly younger Carrie and sort of see her,” Macdonald recalled. “She was a bit sort of gothy and kind of like, they gave me little vines and I got makeup. It was really fancy.”
That dark history informs the guarded exterior Kerry presents to the world, particularly when interacting with Hal Jordan.
As Macdonald noted, Kerry’s entire dynamic is built around masking deep-seated survival instincts: “From the get-go when you meet Carrie, and certainly when Carrie meets Hal, they recognize in each other that there’s a lot of bravado masking something very vulnerable inside.”
Kerry may have left Gotham behind, but the past she buried is shaping every move she makes, with Lanterns streaming weekly on HBO on Sunday.
