Earl Charles Spencer cautioned Prince Harry against rushing into marriage with Meghan Markle, according to investigative author Tom Bower’s 2022 book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors.
How Diana’s Family Responded to Meghan Markle
According to Bower, Harry introduced Meghan to Princess Diana‘s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, along with Diana’s close confidante Julia Samuel, hoping his mother’s family and inner circle would notice striking similarities between the two.
However, Diana’s family did not see the parallel, according to Bower’s reporting.
“He was disappointed,”Bower wrote, via The Express. “No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family.”
Bower wrote that Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, stepped in to voice those concerns directly to Harry:
“Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage.”
The phrasing refers to Spencer drawing from his own three marriages when giving advice, rather than issuing three distinct warnings. Harry, however, reacted with frustration to his uncle’s intervention.
The conversation remains an uncorroborated claim from Bower’s reporting, with neither Buckingham Palace nor the Sussexes offering public comment.
Harry and Meghan announced their engagement in late 2017 and married on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. They are now parents to two kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
