Mahershala Ali Breaks Down in Tears Over His 9-Year-Old Daughter

Sitting down for an interview with GA, the actor became visibly overcome with emotion when discussing the intense balance between his demanding film career and raising his 9-year-old daughter.

Ali, whose daughter was born just four days before he took home his first Oscar for Moonlight in 2017, reflected on how difficult it has been to leave his family for extended productions, specifically recalling being separated across the globe for nearly five months while filming Jurassic World Rebirth.

“We really try to stay together as best we can,” Ali explained. “Going to do Jurassic a couple years ago, that meant like I was kind of not with them for like five months… We were on the other side of the world, just not being able to—missing each other just in terms of times. They’re waking up, I’m going to bed; they’re going to bed, I’m waking up.”

The breaking point arrived as Ali recounted the painful, mature grace his daughter showed him when professional obligations forced him to step away from family life.

“I know she sees me trying, and she gives me credit for that,” Ali shared, his voice beginning to crack. “Because there’s been times when I was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I can’t hang out with you right now.’ And she’ll have her reaction to that… and I remember saying, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, I have to go to work.’ And she’s crying, and she goes, ‘Oh, it’s not your fault’.”

At that memory, Ali broke down in tears, pausing the interview to ask for a tissue as he collected himself.

“So part of me is just very grateful that that’s her attitude at least right now on it,” Ali confessed after taking a moment. “I just try to honor her feelings. When your kid has an expectation, however rational or irrational, and you kind of can’t meet it, you’re just like, ‘Well, now I need to walk into the ocean.’ No matter how right you are, no matter how correct the decision is, no matter how considered it is, it’s not a great feeling.”

Ali noted that as children mature, their honesty hits far harder because they possess the language to express real heartbreak. That vulnerability ultimately channeled directly into his performance in Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, where he plays a father in the throes of overwhelming family chaos.
