Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 9 has been out for days, and fans are still processing what they just watched. The Boss has finally made his full entrance, and the fallout is catastrophic. If you’ve been trying to untangle exactly who this man is and what his return means for everyone else in the story, here’s your complete breakdown.
The Boss Is Kai, and Kai Is Not Who the Cross-Eyes Think He Is
The Cross-Eyes Boss is not a single identity. Instead, multiple personalities inhabit the body of a human named Ai Coleman. Among them, Kai is by far the most dangerous. He founded the Cross-Eyes organization from scratch and transformed it into one of the most feared groups in the Magic User world, known as Mystiqora.
Kai, often simply referred to as “The Boss,” is actually the incarnation of a mysterious supernatural entity called Hole, which possesses Ai’s body with the sole purpose of eradicating every Magic User in existence. This detail is especially important because Kai’s followers are completely unaware of it.
The Cross-Eyes gained popularity under Kai’s leadership because many members believed he wanted to give powerless sorcerers a chance to fight back against a corrupt elite that treated weaker magic users as worthless. In reality, Kai never intended to create peace between factions. He wanted total destruction, and most of his followers still do not realize it.
How Kai Became Who He Is?

Kai’s story begins with a human named Ai Coleman. Obsessed with becoming a sorcerer, Ai willingly became a test subject for Professor Kasukabe’s experiments, which involved transplanting sorcerer heads onto his body.
Ai possessed a special connection to Hole, a physical manifestation of humanity’s collective hatred. During the experiments, Hole merged with him, fundamentally changing his existence.
The result was a fractured personality. Aikawa became the version of the sorcerer Ai had always dreamed of becoming, while Kai, heavily influenced by Hole, evolved into a ruthless and violent individual. Three identities now existed within a single body, each with completely different motivations. The iconic Cross-Eyes markings are even described as appearing almost like birthmarks in Kai’s case.
What Exactly Happened in Episode 9
After recovering from his near-fatal injuries with help from Natsuki, Kai returned stronger than ever in Episode 9. Using stolen magic from En, he unleashed an enormous cloud of transforming mushroom smoke against Shin and Noi, nearly killing both of them before escaping.
Characters once viewed as practically invincible suddenly appeared helpless against Kai. His arrival completely shifted the tone of the episode, and yet the series continues to avoid painting him as a straightforward villain. To the Cross-Eyes members, Kai remains a savior, despite the horrifying nature of his actions.
The latter half of Episode 9 explores the aftermath of the battle and reveals events from six years earlier, exposing the secret Dokuga kept hidden from the other Cross-Eyes officers.
Despite his loyalty to the organization, Dokuga manipulated his fellow members because he believed they would abandon the cause if they learned the truth about Kai. In his mind, deception was necessary to preserve the organization and its ideals.
This adds yet another layer to an already morally complex story. The Cross-Eyes officers are not only unknowingly following false ideals, but their most trusted comrade has also been carefully shaping what they believe from the shadows.
What to Expect From the Finale
Dorohedoro has always thrived on moral ambiguity and chaos, and Episode 9 pushes those themes even further. Fans are now left in an even more difficult position when it comes to deciding who to root for.
Characters like Shin and Noi remain incredibly charismatic, but they still serve as enforcers for a deeply oppressive system. Meanwhile, the Cross-Eyes rebel against that same system, though they seek destruction rather than reform.
Given the raw power at Kai’s disposal, there aren’t many in this world who could hope to stand up to him. Though one person does come to mind.
Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 11, the finale, drops on May 27 on Crunchyroll and Netflix, while Episode 10 will drop on May 20.
