One episode from the finale and Daemons of the Shadow Realm decided to slow down. A new faction just got introduced. Akio‘s situation took a turn nobody saw coming. And the best moment of the episode involved Hana’s Jason Statham poster collection. Somehow all of this works.
Hana, Dera and the Married Couple Energy Nobody Approved
Hana has been in the background long enough that getting an episode that actually reminds you why she is the best character feels like a gift.
She is worrying about money and family registers while everyone else is dealing with supernatural conspiracies and she is completely right to be. Her room being a Statham shrine while Dera’s is essentially a private armory tells you everything about both of them in one visual joke that the show lands without overselling.
Their argument about kids and finances reads exactly like an old married couple who have never once admitted that is what they are and the episode is aware of that. Hana being blunt about not liking children while drawing a very clear line between that and actually wanting innocent children harmed is the kind of character distinction that earns genuine trust and the show makes it count. Azami ending up with these two specifically is quietly the best outcome available to her.
Ken continues to be the most relatable person in the entire cast by reacting to every supernatural development like a normal human being and somehow becoming the responsible big brother figure for Yuru and Azami in the process. Yuru hiding inside a closet because small dark places help him relax when he is sick is peak Yuru energy.
Jin getting flustered over the “we’re not friends” moment, the anglerfish stamps, naming his daemons Love and Sincerity, all of it tracks perfectly for a character the show has been quietly making more endearing every episode.
The West faction introduction and Nishino Village being confirmed as a third player changes the board considerably this close to the finale. The guy from the West looks genuinely cool. Akio’s scene not being the trap everyone expected and instead pointing toward him falling in with the enemy is the development that sits most uncomfortably because his relationship with his daemons reads less like attachment and more like a butcher who has favorites among his tools.
One episode left and the show clearly has at least a full season of story still to tell. Season 2 had better be announced next week.
