After episode 8 went to genuinely dark places and episode 9 spent its time as a setup episode, “By the Sea” is A Livid Lady’s Guide to Getting Even doing something it has not done in a while. Breathing. This is the quietest and most relaxed episode the show has produced and it works precisely because of how well it understands when to pull back.
Lunoa Gets Her Moment and Elisabeth Actually Teaches Something
The episode opens with Lunoa wanting to be more useful to Elisabeth, specifically wanting to learn the merchant side of things in the same way her father operated.
It is a small character beat that the show handles without making a big deal of it and the contrast between nervous Lunoa waiting at Hammitt’s estate and the same girl handing out perfume as gifts to his wife Carella and daughter Manilla by the end of the episode is the kind of quiet growth this show does best when it is not being brutal about everything else.
Arzeus Hammitt wanting to form an allegiance with Traitre is the main business of the episode and Elisabeth handles it with her usual efficiency. She agrees, eyes the nearby harbor for expansion purposes, gives him a gift, signs the contract and moves on.
The license from Albert arriving alongside a warning that she will be watched more closely because of questions about her origins is the episode’s most significant plot development. Albert is curious about where she actually came from and that curiosity is going to matter.
The gang situation is the episode’s funniest sequence. Elisabeth’s group runs into thugs, Misha destroys them immediately, and Elisabeth forces the surviving one to take them to his boss.
Million, the leader, gets the full Elisabeth treatment. Take the offer or find out what happens to people who do not. He takes the offer. Her explaining to Lunoa afterward that acting tough is a core part of being a merchant in this world is the closest thing to a mentorship moment Elisabeth has had with anyone and the show earns it without making it sentimental.
Chris Is Closing In and Two Mysterious Men Are Up to Something
The Haldoria section is brief and deliberately understated. Friede and Sylvia receiving gifts from Chris feels routine until Chris visits Graham at a bar.
Graham is the mercenary leader from the Sarjas arc and he has information about Elisabeth, not her identity specifically but enough. Chris being assigned to keep an eye on her is the thread the show is pulling taut heading into the final stretch of the season.
Two mysterious men also doing something in the background is the kind of plant that is going to pay off later and the episode does not belabor it. It just puts it there.
The episode closes on Hammitt’s private beach with Carella, Manilla, and the whole group, Elisabeth handing out a new skin protection cream she has developed, which is the most peaceful this show has looked since episode one.
After everything Elisabeth has done across ten episodes, watching her sit on a beach with people who genuinely seem to like her is quietly significant. She built something. It is working. And the people trying to dismantle it are getting closer.
Episode 10 is A Livid Lady’s Guide to Getting Even at its most composed and it is a very good look on the show.
