The Early Spring had everything going for it on paper. Jing Boran and Sun Qian, a mature romance premise, an advertising workplace setting that promised something grounded, and enough pre-release buzz to make it one of the more anticipated Cdramas of 2026. I watched a significant chunk of it. Then I stopped. Here is the honest breakdown of why.
Luke Is Not Complicated. He Is Just Mean.
There is a very loud section of the fandom currently defending Luke as a misunderstood man who shows love through actions rather than words and cannot be blamed for his communication style. That reading requires a lot of charitable interpretation that the actual text does not support.
Three years into a relationship, Flora calls Luke after a deeply unsettling incident at work. His response is to tell her she looks like the easiest person to control and push around. Not as an accident, not as a moment he immediately walks back, just as a thing he says to his girlfriend who called him because she needed him.
Jing Boran has enough natural charisma to make you keep watching anyway and the drama understands that and leans on it completely. The pattern becomes visible after enough episodes. Luke says something that lands badly, sometimes very badly, a small gesture follows, the ledger resets.
Flora accepts it each time and the show presents that acceptance as evidence of profound love rather than as anything worth examining more carefully. That framing is where the drama started losing me. Messy relationships are interesting. Cycles that the writing refuses to interrogate are a different thing.
The Adaptation Gave Up Flora’s Interior Life
The source material gave Flora a genuinely complicated inner life, specifically around losing someone close to her unexpectedly and the professional disappointment that hit at the same time. Those two things together created a version of Flora who was navigating grief, ambition, and a relationship simultaneously, which gave her real texture as a character.
The drama removed most of that. What is left is a Flora who exists primarily in response to whatever Luke is doing rather than as someone with her own clearly defined interior.
Sun Qian had a genuinely strong 2026 before this drama and watching her here you can see her working with material that keeps narrowing her options. The stiffness people are noting in her performance is not Sun Qian regressing. It is Sun Qian with very little to play that is not reactive.
The advertising workplace setting has the same problem. An industry with its own rhythms, politics and specific pressures could have given the romance real grounding. Instead it is generic backdrop. People get promoted at a pace that makes no professional sense. The work exists to create proximity between the leads rather than to tell you anything about who these people are when they are not looking at each other.
The Chemistry Carries It Further Than the Writing Deserves
The honest counterargument is that the chemistry between Jing Boran and Sun Qian is genuinely there and the production is beautiful. The color palette is deliberate, the styling is exceptional, Jing Boran apparently contributed pieces from his own wardrobe for Luke which explains a lot about how effortless the character looks on screen. If you are watching for atmosphere, tension and two charismatic people wanting each other, The Early Spring delivers that consistently.
But one reviewer on MyDramaList put it better than I could. “But if ‘the chemistry is amazing’ has become the final defense of a twenty-four-episode drama, I do start wondering what exactly the other twenty-three hours are supposed to be doing.”
Chemistry is the opening argument. Long form storytelling is supposed to build the rest of the case. Here it does not and at some point around the middle of the season that gap stops being something you can overlook.
The people in the Love It camp are not wrong about what they are getting from this show. I needed more than what it was willing to give and it became clear it was not going to get there.
